THE ART OF BEING TRADITIONAL WITH A MODERN APPROACH....

http://blog.blogadda.com/2014/01/04/spicy-saturday-picks-january-4-2014-nice-posts-by-indian-bloggers
A quintessential Indian woman should be traditional. She should be shy, reserved, blushing at the rate of 1 blush per 15 seconds and above all she must practice geometrical drawings with her toes on the ground at the sight of a guy she likes. According to the “SOCIETY, A CRAZY BREED” dictionary, a modern girl means “A homo sapien of the female gender who suffers from a psychological illness whereby she believes that she is born with the freedom that only the male gender enjoys.” In a country like India, being modern is the more unacceptable than pre marital sex.

So I got enlisted in one of the premium matrimonial websites last year, for a period of 3 mths. My profile was paid for, extra bucks were thrown in to get my profile highlighted in blue and a little more was spent for the ease with which the male species would come across a tigress like me. After all I am such a magnificent catch. At the end of 3 mths and 72 proposals, all of which came from divorcees, innocent 25yr old divorcee with YouTube links on his profile of him singing,  10th class fail, 45 year old pedophiles, bald body builders, too thin to be carried on my shoulders, watchman, Muslim men with a fantasy of marrying a Hindu girl and women pretending to be men, my family called it quits. They were disappointed with the kind of crowd I was drawing to myself. My relatives declared that there was something very very wrong with me. When every second Indian traditional girl is finding her Mr. Perfect through matrimonial site intervention, why not me? The answer was found in my Bio which read something like this:

“We are looking for a suitable alliance for our fair, well educated and employed daughter. Our daughter is Modern and was raised in the North. We seek alliance from Like minded boy with SHUDH JADAKAM. Please contact us for the detailed horoscope”

The reason behind my failed matrimonial fashion parade was the word “MODERN”. After a few hours of analyzing, over analyzing, putting forward a thesis and a dozen antithesis, my family decided to replace the word “MODERN” with “TRADITIONAL WITH A MODERN APPROACH”. That is the sole hurdle in my journey towards matrimonial enlightenment. So now my 'About Me' says:

“We are looking for a suitable alliance for our fair, well educated and employed daughter. Our daughter is traditional with a modern approach and was raised in the North. We seek alliance from Like minded boy with SHUDH JADAKAM. Please contact us for the detailed horoscope.”

(Kindly note that there is no mention of the fact that I am an advocate. Thank you very much.)

How exactly does one become traditional with a modern approach? Does it mean that I drape myself with Kanjeevaram saree while wearing Louis Vuitton boots on my feet? Does it mean that I visit the temple every day and later smoke a joint at a rave party? Or does it mean that I touch my grandparent’s feet every time I leave the house and then at night share a snifter glass of wine with them? What exactly did it mean?

And then it hit me. Almost all Indian women are “Traditional with a modern approach”. Yes we are. We do like a drink every now and then but our family doesn’t know about it. We do wear short skirts when with friends but change into Kurta Pajama with Dupatta to cover our ample bosoms when we visit our grandparents. We do not see pre marital sex as taboo but we won’t tell about it to anyone. We like watching or reading porn but we won’t be open about it like the men. We have desires that our man knows but our family thinks we commit the crime that is sex only to procreate. We gossip about women who are adventurous, all the while hiding the adventures we have been a part of. We are Modern packed in a facade that is tradition.

So yes I am an epitome of a “Traditional with a Modern approach” woman. I have my secrets and I have my not so secret desires. I can make you a part of my secrets and force you to fall in love, all the while hiding my reality from the society. I lead a dual life. I am an illusionist.

And so you ask me, will I get married now that I am no more modern? Well, I promise you guys one thing. Whatever happens with me, it shall not be an ordinary story. It shall not be a simple case and it shall definitely not be through a matrimonial website parade. After all, I am traditional with a modern approach. *WINKS*

P.S- Do not see me as someone who is against the idea of getting married with the help of matrimonial websites. I am all for it and many of my friends are getting married to perfect hot sizzlers because of it. I just don’t like being a part of it.
P.P.S- New Year to you all!!! It is upon you and destiny to make it Happy or Crappy.

  4. Your definition of Traditional with modern outlook hits bulls eye.

I think people approach matrimonial profiles just like HR Managers approach job applications where they look for the presence of keywords forgetting that an actual living human being lies behind the profile. Its also why you see the same set of phrases or keywords being used everywhere and by everyone.

Happy New year and dare I say - Happy - Groom Hunting :P

We do belong to a bigoted society that does not practice what it preaches. Half the men on those matrimonial websites would claim to be all for woman empowerment and equality amongst sexes, when interviewed. But come forth a personal choice and their prehistoric mindset surfaces up.
    Just two words---IGNORE THEM
I am so sure you will find someone who will respect you for what you are---a traditional woman with a modern outlook ;)

Ofcourse you are a catch Red, one sizzling steak will come your way soon I'm sure. Your parents did not put the fact that you are an advocate? Ofcourse, which guy would want to marry a girl who quotes legal section numbers and rules at him :D Your parents have thought it through :P

  9. :D

A matrimonial website seems to be the ultimate example of 'traditional with a modern approach' in itself. :P In the past one had to rely on some nosey aunt of some distance cousin to forge matrimonial alliances. But now one can use the modern approach of doing that with some clicks of a mouse.

By the way, did your profile have a 'hobbies' column ? I wonder about the consequences if only your parents would have added something like - "She likes to blog and is the author of the well known 'Red Handed'..." to the contents of your profile. :D :D :D

  14. "We are Modern packed in a facade that is tradition."

Bang on. I am starting to think that the reason behind me being the "proud" black sheep of my family is because I have always emphasized my 'modern' side over the traditional one. It sucks to live a dual life because a part of me wants to be traditional (not the way the 'society' means by the word) and the other major part of me is a liberal bird flying higher and higher into a chamber of solitude.

Nothing against matrimonial sites either but would never, ever be a part of them. xD

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually I feel this duality is good. This constant tug of war between being liberal and being traditional keeps us grounded. RIGHT?

  15. I got hitched via shadi.com so I speak from experience.Seven years ago, I created my own profile and wrote my own intro. My parents had little say in it. If I ever liked a profile, I sent interest and if things looked peachy I informed my parents who took things forward. I would only say that take this platform as an opportunity to meet/date interesting guys and don't do it under the pressure of finding your soul mate. Things worked out for me and it has been amazing 6 years since. Good luck to you!

  29. the words modern and traditional are created by confused people who din't know how to preserve indian culture with the change in life style after industrial revolution or economic reforms.modern and traditional are not two words, with time there are positives and negatives with development around and the person who preserves his culture without deviating to imitate that is not his origin is truly indian. so its upto people to marry someone with culture or without culture.

most of them dunno what their culture is,how they can define whats traditional and modern?

lets explain the concept of marriage.marriage is a medieval custom to keep society in order and stable.in ancient india ,opposite genders din't had scope to socialise so to keep future generations intact and to flourish they introduced a custom called marriage.marriage happens between two strangers and the marriage is a commitment to be responsible for the rest of life.so they introduced rituals ,astrology, all stuff around marriage to create stable society.in modern world ,opposite genders have many occasions from schooling to public places to gather, meet and understand.why do we need a medieval custom called marriage which was meant for strangers to keep together. its very funny when people opt for marriage in modern world.

i do know that people are not flawless or completely ideal to follow above theory,so people opt for marriage.

its really funny when people post their marriage ads,it sounds more like ebay business than getting into relationship.why any educated has to search grooms or brides online, are they too lost in mind to not to be able to find a bride or groom around people you know.

we indian women fit so well in that category of being traditional with a modern approach. and the saddest point is, even if we want to change that outlook, you will have like some twenty people pulling you down for doing so. and in all this process, there is sort of a give-up that one feels. you end up feeling, its okay to wear a salwar suit with a saree like duppatta covering your bosom since you get to wear that one piece with your husband or partner or gang of girls anyways. You feel its okay to lie about you not using swear words or drinking or smoking or such madern things , since you do that anyway when no one is watching you. or when people who do watch you are those whom you know that they dont care. (okay did that make sense at all) But the point is, why should we do that menn..?? its so annoying, i mean here we are talking about being so oooh and liberated and all that bleh. but the minute it comes to describing the girl to a prospective groom, one always hears lines like..she is a very sanskaari ladki who never wears short skirts and always wears bindi..I mean SERIOUSLY???!! you want to measure the sanskaari-ness of a girl by the one red dot on her forehead. I mean come one man. I have people telling me, now that i am married, i need to wear a bindi..else its baaaad. i mean what the bhennnn !!!! My husband doesnt care if dont wear a mangalsutra for gods sake. and you are talking about a pansy bindi??!! pffft. but who cares..i am as awesome as awesome can be :D:D:D
anyway..you have written one helluva awesome post only. sorry for the slight distraction..you took me on a mahila samiti trip only :D:D:D
keep up the mental spirit yo ! you will get a brilliant guy i am telling you. screw the mad society. we rock.
Cheers molay !! keep up the mantalness \m/

  51. Hilarious post... especially the picture of the girl with the saree cut off, perfectly depicts the nature of this post. Yeah, society sucks most of the time... you gotta follow your own arrow. Have you heard this song by Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow. it would go well with this post. Take care and have a wonderful 2014.

  52. Hilarious would be an understatement.

Good Lord, your post took me back 3 years when this same drama happened at my place; including the Shudh Jadakam. Thank God, I got a decent guy. But the whole experience was surreal and I don't mean in the nice way ;)
Good luck. Emotional atyachar and more drama is on its way!

P.S : I loved the way you described the "TRADITIONAL WITH A MODERN APPROACH” It's all true :)

  55. Awesome as always babe! It reminded me of my friend who had to attend a wedding and then meet some friends post it.. She wore a Kanjeevaram but hardly had any time to change, so she struts into a pub and shares a peg with the friends (all guys) she was to meet... and all this in Chennai with Mallibu (flowers) in the hair! :D

  58. Lol...funny post! Had me laughing all the way through. Thankfully, I've never had to do that...the whole traditional stuff I mean. I haven't had to hide the fact that I drink, wear short skirts or dresses. The only 'covering up' I did was wear jeans and a t-shirt. Good luck with the matrimonial websites...heard they can be pretty frustrating. Like any online dating website I suppose.

  59. Nice post Red. Infact my friend is going through the same thing - a guy friend. Paid account in matrimonial sites and he is losing his interest too! The problem with him is that girls want to know if he owns a house in Mumbai and since the answer is in the negative, they go elsewhere! Problems on both side of the table, Red! :)

  60. Ah! These traditions, will finish this civilization one day...

  61. I just commented on someone's blog on the tragedy of the sick, patriarchal mindset that dictates everything and for the, being equal, means some alien concept. I rubbed some feathers the wrong way with my extreme pov, including young women in the family. It's so bloody hypocrite, I mean and wonder whether we should call ourselves civilized.

  62. She should be shy, reserved, blushing at the rate of 1 blush per 15 seconds and above all she must practice geometrical drawings with her toes on the ground at the sight of a guy she likes!!!! ..... Lol!! Seriously.... I also don't wanna end up a person met through a matrimonial site... that too with so much insane demands.

    Loved the post! :)

  65. I'm in love with your blogpage and this post so resonates what I've been thinking all this while. Been there, made to do that and cringed at every expression of interest from a 45+ year old widow/divorcee (who haven't faulted ever) and looking for a virgin/bus conductor/clerk/men looking for thrills (especially in the night hours)/very young men just out of college. And they want, "traditional but modern women".

At one point of time my hobby section included - interior designing. Really? :O What's that? An intelligent auntie interpreted it as, "it's like keeping the house neat, clean and homely"! Seriously? Why do people waste bothering to get themselves a degree/diploma for it.

I'm so inspired now to dish out my stories of "The Hunt" lasting 8 years, including 2 years at my will. And i don't hunt anymore ;) rather go with the flow.
