Now every girl, be their size be
XS/S/M/L/X/XXL/XXXL, be their color be black/brown/yellow/red/white, be their
bra’s be trainer/seamless/push up/padded/strapless, be their looks be Ugly Betty style/ Penelope Cruz touch, be they be of any kind you can possibly
imagine, they have atleast once in their
lives imagined themselves as models walking down the ramp or in many cases day
dreamed about being beauty pageant winners. Atleast I had as a little girl.
I used to sit by my mom, who
would accompany me to rate the Miss World contestants out of 10, commenting on
the way they catwalk and the change that is needed in those barbies. My mother
would be usually in her Maxi with her uncombed hair tied into a bun, while
her hands chopped vegetables as her eyes stayed glued to the TV screen. I was
almost always dressed like a boy, a tomboy with a BOB cut whom boys mistook
for being a bully. Imagining me as a beauty contestant was the closest I got to
behaving like a girl.
While slogging my ass out in the
gym, the small TV attached to the treadmill happened to show the movie Miss
Congeniality. There was a part in it where every contestant wants to bring
world peace. Now I have to agree that it definitely was funny but it made me
wonder as to how these thin sticks actually work towards world peace and for
the betterment of humanity or act like ambassadors of righteousness. Blame it on my General Knowledge
or call me ignorant when I tell you that I don’t remember a single beauty
pageant winner who has stood up to what she said on stage and actually did her
bit for the poor and the downtrodden. Offcourse, bribe in the form of Media
coverage can be reason enough to set her pedicured foot inside a slum and click
pictures with the dirtiest looking kids of the lot.
I understand that world peace is
something one can only desire or pray for. But saying that as a Miss World or
Miss Universe you will work towards the empowerment of those who have been
subjugated for long, and then using it as a source to become an actress or just
keeping the crown for a year, is absolute bullshit. How exactly did Aishwarya
Rai work towards World Peace? Is Priyanka Chopra spending nights awake thinking
of means to bring world peace? I guess not. All they do is go to shows
organised by NGO’s and then place their fragile hands on surprised kids and go ‘Awwwww’
while the Media goes haywire clicking pictures from every angle possible. Miss
World title brings with it the chance to travel the globe, meet royalty, world
leaders and party with the famous. This is occasionally hindered by opening
ceremony of supermarkets and NGO visits.
Actually we are at fault here
since we wouldn’t crown a girl who gets on the stage and blurts out that she wouldn’t
work for the betterment of the society but wants to win the crown because it
has been her childhood girly dream and that she could use it as a step towards
the movie industry. The blame rests on us for being hypocrites. Beauty Pageants
should only be about beauty and nothing more. I hope the realization comes
quick.
very true...beauty pageants now are nothing more than a mere audition for the big screen.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for being the first to read :)
DeleteHippocratic speeches aside, beauty pageant winners at least have pretty faces that people can ogle at albeit temporarily. Politicians don't even give you that luxury with their speeches :P.
ReplyDeletegehehehehe now that is something to ponder on!
DeleteHow true! How I wish the hypocrisy ends. These contests have been reduced to being a ladder to bollywood.Very rarely do we have women like Sushmita Sen,who even if not for world peace, has adopted two orphaned girls.
ReplyDeleteSushmita Sen, one of the woman I respect!!!!!
DeleteThankyou so much for reading...
Okay! Now we know how you looked like a kid. Even I always had a bob cut and now that I want long hair, it just won't grow :(
ReplyDeleteAnd if models actually started working on world peace, they would get Nobel peace prize instead of winning the pageant, isn't it?
Actually we should see the hidden meaning and read between the lines.
When they say, I want to work for world peace, it only means that they want to work in the movies, bring the entire population in the nearest multiplex where they watch movies in complete silence. That way it would bring some peace!
Did I make any sense????
Hehe, very well said, CD! :D
DeleteI so dont want long hair that I keep on chopping it off :D
Deleteand about the whole multiplex thing,, hahahahahah watte idea madamjeee :D
The truth is always bitter :-/
ReplyDeletea very interesting thought
Stay Blessed ^_^
Thanks for reading sire!
DeleteSeriously...all those fake promises...trying to be goody goody and full of idealism. It's all senseless.
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, it's a good medium to get into the film industry without facing the infamous casting couch.
Good post. You always give your readers a good laugh. Love you for this!!
XOXO
Yeh but after a period of time casting couch happens, especially when that whole Miss India phase gets over.
DeleteThankyou sooo much :)
hypocrisy should die , for sure
ReplyDeletebut is beauty all about beauty (minus personality)
And personality manifests in demeanours and words as well
You made me thinking..
Good one red!
Beauty includes personality..and personality is important when it comes to these pageants, but acting like a politician on stage is so not acceptable!
DeleteHuh...great post. Me too sported the same boy cut for a long long time. World peace and beauty contests??? LOL!!! Aisha and Piggy Chops are working over time to bring world peace:P Ask Abhishek or Gauri Khan!!!
ReplyDeletePoor Gauri Khan! will slap me left and right if I approach her with my question. Gahahahahaha! I adore your comments!
DeleteVery true. The world would have been a different place had people said what they meant and did what they said, Great post :)
ReplyDeleteThankyou and welcome to the blog :)
DeleteMiss Congeniality!! One of my favorite movies coz i looooove Sandra Bullock..When I watched that movie, even I couldn't understand any connection between a beauty pageant and World Peace!
ReplyDeleteJust were we trying to link two wrong things, creating wrong connection...
Nice post! A thoughtful one... :)
Miss Congeniality is aweeeesome no!?!!!!!
DeleteThanks for reading my girl :)
True, why bother about something for which they have no brains at all. Do what they are good at, showing legs and pouting.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the image of your mom and you was so lively. I could see myself sitting in a frock doing homework :D
heheheheheheh Homework...oh my mumma never let me do my homework in front of the TV though :(
DeleteMan, your post makes me realise how much of a boy I was/ am. (sadface)
ReplyDeleteModels? Walking down a ramp? World peace? I was busy inventing my own language and competing with the local street kids in races.
(Upon hindsight, quite an embarrassing childhood)
Also, I think we are all hypocrites in a way. The only constant thing with us is change, I don't know how right/wrong that sounds, but that's what me thinks =)
YOUR OWN LANGUAGE!!!! Now that is aweeesome! I used to be a fan of on of the kid who used to talk to his frnds in the language he invented. :(
DeleteTrue. It is weird how an exquisitely chosen jury panel ends up applauding the most fabricated answers. :P
ReplyDeleteYES YES YES YES EXACTLYYY!!!
DeleteFrom our young age we are tutored to say what people want to hear not what we want to say.People who say want they feel never gets to be "Miss Congeniality"... :D
ReplyDeleteThat is true...but we do mock then in our minds even as they say "WORLD PEACE" and then continue to give them the crown!
Deletesigh...this is so true..
ReplyDeletebeauty pagents shud be just to judge the beauty of the candidates..and maybe some brains...
why do ppl even expect such answers in the first place is something i have never been able to understand..
when the ultimate destination of almost all those chicks is the glamour world...
well written RED..
PS-ooooo.....tomboy u looked as a kid..tehehhe..
aaan...by ze way..
Happy International Women's Day in advance..!!!
cheers!!!
Happy Women's Day to you too my girl!! Personality is important in beauty pageants but politics??!!!
DeleteI disagree.
ReplyDeleteI think beauty pageants have been indirectly contributing to world peace in more ways than ever thought - I can bet u that nobody was thinking "war" or other such violent excursions during the swim suit round of a beauty pageant - I personally feel that Poonam Pandey should be given a Nobel Peace Prize for the unity that she brings amongst men of different races because she has proved an important peace message - testosterone knows no color, creed, weapons of mass destruction, oil money etc...etc... similarly, when these models speak, seriously.. who's even listening??? We're all just united peacefully in the global charm of ogling...
To more such swim suit rounds, to more beauty pageants, to world peace ....
:D
LOL..this comment is epic!! :)
DeleteBwahahahahaaa xD
DeleteI agree, this screams EPIC!
NOW THIS IS SOO NOT FAIR :P...YOU COMMENT HAS MORE LIKINGS THAN MY POST ITSELF...
DeleteBut hahah sexy comment :D
Well.. I beg to differ, on the last line that you wrote! Ofcourse beauty pagaents should be for beauty, but not beauty alone. Beauty comes with a responsibility. Beautiful people are more heard, accepted and ppl get attracted to them. So if they have the power to convey certain message across, they should!
ReplyDeleteHow much they do it is another story! But beauty pageants were initially about beauty with brains, but latelym, we haven't really seen a great combinationa as such!
Great post, as usual!! :D
Beauty is not just about beauty but personality too. But talking about world peace with no intentions at all, is horrendous!!
DeleteThanks for reading girl :)
How many times we have been irritated with the 'world peace' bit which these models include in their answers...
ReplyDeleteVery nice and accurate post Red!!
P.S they should include you in the panel which groom the contestants for pageants..atleast we would get innovative and sensible answers :P
They definitely wouldnt want a tomboy in the panel :P
Deleteeheheheehhehe
I completely agree with the part where we are to blame. Beauty contests should be stuck to beauty and nothing else.
ReplyDeleteAnd I too dreamt of walking down the ramp in beautiful, sexy clothes :P!! In fact I still do when I see the ladies walking in beautiful clothes, flaunting their bodies!! SIGH :D!!!
Hheheheh guess what, even I daydream about it, wearing those body hugging sexy clothes and walking around with perfect everything :P
DeleteWell...given the Priyanka Chopra became Miss World after giving an incorrect answer in the last round....there really wasn't much left in that competition after that now was there?
ReplyDeleteIt's an attempt to show pretty girls can have brains too. Would have been noble, if they weren't reading out from scripts mugged up the night before.
Really??!!! I dont remember the whole Priyanka scene!! Really!!!!! gahahahah
Deleteand it would be noble if they atleast accepted that it is a farce!
Ah, dont take it seriously. No one's listening to them. Atleast not men. Next time someone says that, lets ask her to explain how exactly is she planning to do that...;-)
ReplyDeleteBusy ogling arent you guys :D
Deleteand the fact is that no one gives a damn whether they actually do anything or just says those words with their pretty mouths to look angelic. wtf really? right?
ReplyDeletebeauty pageants just use world peace as an excuse to stay relevant whereas we really could have done away with them. are the miss universes really the most beautiful? nope! and if u want to watch pretty people in bikinis, go watch ftv or baywatch people!
Thr are so many beautiful women than the ones on stage!1 CORRECT!!!!
DeleteAnd FTv! Dont even get me started..toothpicks walking
sweety some people are just like that ...bhangi hai sab !! pakhandi paapi duniya
ReplyDeletePAKHANDI PAAPI DUNIYA...Ghahahaha
DeleteI am so gonna go around saying this!
I had a bob cut too as a child!! :D
ReplyDeleteI have never been able to tolerate beauty pageants because I feel they are full of empty promises- a farce. Still, being the hypocrite I am, I would watch the show nevertheless. Almost every winner says the same thing, 'I'd work for world peace, human rights, gender equality blah blah..' ooh, really? Fully agree with what you have, especially at the end. Why transform the contest to show how noble or committed these girls are to world peace when clearly, all they care about is the blessed crown.
Exactly my point..dont let politics and fake promises come on stage!!!!!
Deletekeep it limited to just beauty and personality!
OMG..this is an absolute truth..yeah ..thanks for bringing to the light..Its a bloody hypocrite world out there..Loved the humor in the post :)
ReplyDeleteP.S: heheh..i was a bit like tomboy too..
Thanks for reading :) and welcome to my foolish blog~!
DeleteMay be they should re-frame the question. something like "what would you do to keep people entertained with your so called beauty?" or "how much skin are you ready to show the world for world peace?" ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd ya, my mom stopped watching them because she realized there are much beautiful people at home and neighborhood than those size zero, skinny blabber-heads on the show.
ReplyDeleteCna u belive me when I say this that I used to believe that size zero meant size look like a zero :P
DeleteYeah. Beauty should be abt beauty - and social work should be separate and selfless like Mother Teresa type. These doesnt make a good mix, nor does it benefit anyone.
ReplyDeleteTRUE THAT! Or if you are saying it...then do it!!
Deletehey..nice topic i would say..
ReplyDeleteAnyways I have never imagined of becoming a beauty queen in my entire life because i was quite a tomboy too those days..
I agree this whole peace promise is kinda hypocrite..
U had insert the truth in a humour way..loved that
you never even imagined urself as a participant ? :(
DeleteThankyou for reading :)
Honestly I never get that answer either. Actually I don't get the whole concept of beauty pageants. I could never imagine allowing someone to 'judge' me, that too on looks.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid all I could think of was becoming a classical dancer and a doctor. Of course i am neither now. lol!
I wanted to be a neurosurgeon or a counselor :/
Deletehow true!! and why can't we judge beauty pagents on beauty alone? Why go about pretending its all about something else??
ReplyDeleteExactly my point! Keep it limited to beauty
DeleteSo true...I find it utterly stupid everytime a model goes up there and talks abt working towards world peace! I mean really...why so pretentious!?
ReplyDeleteTRUE TRUE TRUE! Thanks for reading :)
DeleteBeauty pageants should be about beauty and poise. yes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading :)
DeleteSuch an honest and straightforward post! And true in every aspect! I have thought about the same things quite a number of times while watching beauty pageants. They should let a beauty pageant be a beauty pageant and not a declamation competition in school
ReplyDeleteDeclamation competition in school :P
DeleteHhehehehehe
Yes beauty and personality shud be the only criteria..
Hehe they actually get "notes" to prepare for the questions so it is equivalent of us writing all those long long answers in environmental studies class and not doing crap for the environment!
ReplyDeleteBut we dont get crowned or ogled over by millions of people :P
DeleteDon't know about world peace. But they do promote a lot of one-piece and two-piece. :/
ReplyDeleteHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...IO my tummy hurts...Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
DeleteMay I copy-paste this as my reply to spaceman too? :P
Deletespaceman spiff SAID what i wanted ot say..
ReplyDeletethey do promote enough to make lots of money for themselves ..
you are right none of these beautiful queens ever do anything .. that is because the beauty that they have is just on the outside .. inside they are all the same .. with a not os good heart :)
Bikram's
The heart might be good and the personality might be superb and they might be having the face of an angel, but why talk about world peace and things they have no interest on!
Deletebecause that is what sells BIG WORDS , Big ideas
DeleteAnd here I thought I was the only non-modely girl to dream of such stuff!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, totally. That stuff sounds so fake when they say it even. I mean we all know they don't give a rat's ass about world peace.
Loved it Red! :D
x
Thankyou for reading my girl :)
DeleteI think it has something to do with the tag that is 'beauty with brains'. They are just trying really hard to prove that they are non-blonde.
ReplyDeleteBut they fail in doing so isnt it? Talking about world peace like a trained parrot
DeleteExactly :P
DeleteI think this is such a crispy and true post !
ReplyDeleteI so agree with each word here. I enjoy watching them once in a while (they happen once in a while ! ) coz' they are entertaining. No offence, but thei attempts to sound knowledgeable (revisions of Manorama in the nth minute), their attempt to use the best (and longest) words in english, their amazing blunders at trying to sound concerned about something they hardly know of and their attemtp at doing all this and look smart and sexy - I am sure there are exceptions but you hit the nail on its head when you said we need to identify them.
Hightime they said it was their dream ! And we'd be ready to pat them on their back to realizing it :)
ROTFL...Bang on, Red, Bang on!
ReplyDeleteGood post..as always...:-) Enjoyed reading it from start to finish...as always..
ReplyDeleteawww....its an attempt to make these " beauty pageant fiestas" sound less shallow , i guess.
ReplyDeletewel.. i also used to rate those barbies as a kid..(not imagining myself walking down d ramp part:P)and it was fun...U have actually struck the right chord..;)
ReplyDeleteOMG. i used to rate them too. :p And I thought I was the only one. Sheesh. :P
ReplyDeleteTOTALLY agree. No one has done what they supposedly wanted to do. MAJOR fail or what? :P
Hahaha how can you let them be judged on only beauty ? Wont that be too superficial for our our closet hypocrites :P Beauty contest hai bhai, they have to add a beauty is not skin deep tag to it. They have to make it appear less shallow.
ReplyDeleteAnd I note the dresses too, some of them are SO obnoxious :O plus plus, some chics are fugly too. xP
Its just a farce, as if anyone believes them..but you know what astonishes me most, there's mini TV attached to your treadmill..which gym is that? :D
ReplyDeletemay be they do it for survival, because a hell lot of people are against it. so may be this will give them a better image! just like an interview where u say all the lies to get that job ;)
ReplyDeletemay be they do this for teh survival, just like an interview where we say all the lies to get the job ;)
ReplyDeleteYou have a valid point. "Beauty Pageants should only be about beauty and nothing more. I hope the realization comes quick." - this moment will never come!! Sad as it may sound, the contestants know they have to blurt out 'world peace', 'eradicate poverty', 'absolute freedom' in every other sentence to attract judges.
ReplyDeleteabs..right. These beauty pageants and their speeches are becoming a joke in itself..
ReplyDeleteGlad to have found you through Indiblogger. Your newest follower and a regular visitor now
cheers
Kajal
Well composed....
ReplyDeletebeauty pageants = Door to Bollywood/Hollywood..all the woods
I am tempted to just give you the URL to my post but in short, the whole thing revolves around bullshit, the subject-matter of my post, and my upcoming film, is that "Bullshit makes the world go around."
ReplyDeleteSo, no, you won't select a woman who says she wants the crown for a career in Bollywood just as you would not select a job candidate who says "I have a personal life."
well written !
ReplyDelete
