WORLD PEACE PLEASE....

Now every girl, be their size be XS/S/M/L/X/XXL/XXXL, be their color be black/brown/yellow/red/white, be their bra’s be trainer/seamless/push up/padded/strapless, be their looks be Ugly Betty style/ Penelope Cruz touch, be they be of any kind you can possibly imagine, they have  atleast once in their lives imagined themselves as models walking down the ramp or in many cases day dreamed about being beauty pageant winners. Atleast I had as a little girl.

I used to sit by my mom, who would accompany me to rate the Miss World contestants out of 10, commenting on the way they catwalk and the change that is needed in those barbies. My mother would be usually in her Maxi with her uncombed hair tied into a bun, while her hands chopped vegetables as her eyes stayed glued to the TV screen. I was almost always dressed like a boy, a tomboy with a BOB cut whom boys mistook for being a bully. Imagining me as a beauty contestant was the closest I got to behaving like a girl.

While slogging my ass out in the gym, the small TV attached to the treadmill happened to show the movie Miss Congeniality. There was a part in it where every contestant wants to bring world peace. Now I have to agree that it definitely was funny but it made me wonder as to how these thin sticks actually work towards world peace and for the betterment of humanity or act like ambassadors of righteousness. Blame it on my General Knowledge or call me ignorant when I tell you that I don’t remember a single beauty pageant winner who has stood up to what she said on stage and actually did her bit for the poor and the downtrodden. Offcourse, bribe in the form of Media coverage can be reason enough to set her pedicured foot inside a slum and click pictures with the dirtiest looking kids of the lot.

I understand that world peace is something one can only desire or pray for. But saying that as a Miss World or Miss Universe you will work towards the empowerment of those who have been subjugated for long, and then using it as a source to become an actress or just keeping the crown for a year, is absolute bullshit. How exactly did Aishwarya Rai work towards World Peace? Is Priyanka Chopra spending nights awake thinking of means to bring world peace? I guess not. All they do is go to shows organised by NGO’s and then place their fragile hands on surprised kids and go ‘Awwwww’ while the Media goes haywire clicking pictures from every angle possible. Miss World title brings with it the chance to travel the globe, meet royalty, world leaders and party with the famous. This is occasionally hindered by opening ceremony of supermarkets and NGO visits.

Actually we are at fault here since we wouldn’t crown a girl who gets on the stage and blurts out that she wouldn’t work for the betterment of the society but wants to win the crown because it has been her childhood girly dream and that she could use it as a step towards the movie industry. The blame rests on us for being hypocrites. Beauty Pageants should only be about beauty and nothing more. I hope the realization comes quick.

  2. Hippocratic speeches aside, beauty pageant winners at least have pretty faces that people can ogle at albeit temporarily. Politicians don't even give you that luxury with their speeches :P.

  3. How true! How I wish the hypocrisy ends. These contests have been reduced to being a ladder to bollywood.Very rarely do we have women like Sushmita Sen,who even if not for world peace, has adopted two orphaned girls.

  4. Okay! Now we know how you looked like a kid. Even I always had a bob cut and now that I want long hair, it just won't grow :(
And if models actually started working on world peace, they would get Nobel peace prize instead of winning the pageant, isn't it?
Actually we should see the hidden meaning and read between the lines.
When they say, I want to work for world peace, it only means that they want to work in the movies, bring the entire population in the nearest multiplex where they watch movies in complete silence. That way it would bring some peace!

    Did I make any sense????

  6. Seriously...all those fake promises...trying to be goody goody and full of idealism. It's all senseless.

But anyway, it's a good medium to get into the film industry without facing the infamous casting couch.

Good post. You always give your readers a good laugh. Love you for this!!

but is beauty all about beauty (minus personality)
And personality manifests in demeanours and words as well
    You made me thinking..

  10. Miss Congeniality!! One of my favorite movies coz i looooove Sandra Bullock..When I watched that movie, even I couldn't understand any connection between a beauty pageant and World Peace!

Just were we trying to link two wrong things, creating wrong connection...

  12. Man, your post makes me realise how much of a boy I was/ am. (sadface)

Models? Walking down a ramp? World peace? I was busy inventing my own language and competing with the local street kids in races.

(Upon hindsight, quite an embarrassing childhood)

Also, I think we are all hypocrites in a way. The only constant thing with us is change, I don't know how right/wrong that sounds, but that's what me thinks =)

  16. I disagree.

I think beauty pageants have been indirectly contributing to world peace in more ways than ever thought - I can bet u that nobody was thinking "war" or other such violent excursions during the swim suit round of a beauty pageant - I personally feel that Poonam Pandey should be given a Nobel Peace Prize for the unity that she brings amongst men of different races because she has proved an important peace message - testosterone knows no color, creed, weapons of mass destruction, oil money etc...etc... similarly, when these models speak, seriously.. who's even listening??? We're all just united peacefully in the global charm of ogling...

To more such swim suit rounds, to more beauty pageants, to world peace ....

    :D

      But hahah sexy comment :D

  17. Well.. I beg to differ, on the last line that you wrote! Ofcourse beauty pagaents should be for beauty, but not beauty alone. Beauty comes with a responsibility. Beautiful people are more heard, accepted and ppl get attracted to them. So if they have the power to convey certain message across, they should!
How much they do it is another story! But beauty pageants were initially about beauty with brains, but latelym, we haven't really seen a great combinationa as such!
    Great post, as usual!! :D

Very nice and accurate post Red!!

P.S they should include you in the panel which groom the contestants for pageants..atleast we would get innovative and sensible answers :P

  19. I completely agree with the part where we are to blame. Beauty contests should be stuck to beauty and nothing else.
And I too dreamt of walking down the ramp in beautiful, sexy clothes :P!! In fact I still do when I see the ladies walking in beautiful clothes, flaunting their bodies!! SIGH :D!!!

  20. Well...given the Priyanka Chopra became Miss World after giving an incorrect answer in the last round....there really wasn't much left in that competition after that now was there?

It's an attempt to show pretty girls can have brains too. Would have been noble, if they weren't reading out from scripts mugged up the night before.

    1. Really??!!! I dont remember the whole Priyanka scene!! Really!!!!! gahahahah

    ReplyDelete
  22. and the fact is that no one gives a damn whether they actually do anything or just says those words with their pretty mouths to look angelic. wtf really? right?

beauty pageants just use world peace as an excuse to stay relevant whereas we really could have done away with them. are the miss universes really the most beautiful? nope! and if u want to watch pretty people in bikinis, go watch ftv or baywatch people!

I have never been able to tolerate beauty pageants because I feel they are full of empty promises- a farce. Still, being the hypocrite I am, I would watch the show nevertheless. Almost every winner says the same thing, 'I'd work for world peace, human rights, gender equality blah blah..' ooh, really? Fully agree with what you have, especially at the end. Why transform the contest to show how noble or committed these girls are to world peace when clearly, all they care about is the blessed crown.

I so agree with each word here. I enjoy watching them once in a while (they happen once in a while ! ) coz' they are entertaining. No offence, but thei attempts to sound knowledgeable (revisions of Manorama in the nth minute), their attempt to use the best (and longest) words in english, their amazing blunders at trying to sound concerned about something they hardly know of and their attemtp at doing all this and look smart and sexy - I am sure there are exceptions but you hit the nail on its head when you said we need to identify them.
Hightime they said it was their dream ! And we'd be ready to pat them on their back to realizing it :)
