FACEBOOK, THE HAPPY WORLD....

Facebook is a happy world. While my friend Nidhi is having the time of her life with her friend Switty, my college mate Neelu is checking in at CafĂ© Coffee Day with “Yay! Girls Night Out” as the status. I click Like.

I move on to my cousin who has uploaded a photo of herself almost canoedeling with the ‘love of her lyf’ in a place that looks like Leh, thanks to the Yak that is innocently gawking at them in the background. Her tagline says “Thank you my Sonu for making my life so perfect. I LOV U” with picture courtesy given to some dejected soul. I click Like and comment “This is so perfect Sister! I am so happy for you.”  With a straight face and no emotion, I move on to the next.

Hey, look at this! My ex has updated his status “Bought my first Merc, a black beauty. Can’t wait to take my gorgeous wife for a ride in it.”  I wince, walk over to the fridge and take out a tub of Baskin-Robbins ice cream. I then return to the bed, gag myself with it as I move the cursor to update my facebook status.

“Awesome Saturday. Crazy!”

I shut down my laptop and sleep. The ice cream drips on my laptop.

I was unemployed for a whole one year after college. I did not sit for placements, reasons still unknown to me. All the law firms I applied to personally wanted those with experience. Here I was a National Law School graduate, unemployed. I was lost when my father declared that he sees a future Judge in me and I saw the prospect of preparing for Judicial service as the last straw to clutch on while drowning. I hated preparing for it, kept looking for jobs, got a few jobs, rejected them, got rejected and hated myself. But every time a distant relative asked my parents what I was doing with my life, they replied “Our daughter studied in the National Law University but did not sit for placements because she always wanted to give Judicial service a shot. She is now preparing for it.” The listener looked at me and said “Shabash beta…”, making a donkey feel like an intelligent dolphin, all the time cringing in the inside about the subtle reality. But he doesn’t need to know about all that. Does he? He goes home and tells his son how intelligent and competitive Mr. Anil’s daughter is.

Everyone on your facebook list is like that distant relative you told the selective truth to. You deleted the sour part and served him the dessert. He fell for it and got upset at the inefficiency of his child. Facebook is that last course of a buffet and everyone is served desserts. No one can be undisputedly and continuously happy. Fairytales are just enormously exaggerated reality.

Tina just uploaded a picture of her hand with a big chunky diamond ring and a tagline that says ‘On top of the world. Engaged to Mr. SO & SO’. She hides the scared heart that is trying to bury the rejections of the past, the lies that she have told him about her history and the future that is yet to unwrap itself.

You and I, get jealous of her. Self loathing mode initiated.

So, the next time someone shouts out their achievement on facebook or forces you gawk at the picture of them vacationing in Macau, be happy for them and move on realizing that behind all that celebratory hullabaloo and boastful jigs lies a reality as realistic, plain and challenging as yours and mine.

And with that I move on to update my status… “Made my first appearance as a lawyer in court. Feeling like Alan Shore.”

No one has to know about me calling the Male judge “Madam” and making a complete fool of myself.  Do they?

I guess Not.

P.S- The previous post was deleted because I felt disgusted by it.
P.P.S- Thank you for being a reader and a friend. I have something small planned up for you and me this 16th. :)

  1. Love this. Yes people only put their most desirable public self on FB. But that's human nature in my opinion. FB would not be the forum for someone to talk about their scarred heart from the past. Just my opinion :)

  2. I completely agree with your analogy of status updates and desserts- being shown only the happy shiny moments of life. Some of these posts are really irritating coz you can feel the effort of trying too hard to show people that they are having a time of their life- especially the newly married people or people with kids ~argh~

Then again, perhaps it is good in a way- it is their way of choosing to look at the positives of life and being happy about things :)

P.S: I was eager to read the previous post

  3. Every one has a story, better, many stories. But then why not forget about it in times of joy and not give a darn about what tomorrow holds. Bad hair day? Let's not update the status on FB for a day. Let the 'Awesome Mausam' FB status gather some dust that it kicked in the fray of comments and likes. Tomorrow will be a better day, and if that doesn't, we'll always have another tomorrow.

    Nice post.
But just as a side note, keep the ice cream away from the Laptop, it could be a possible turn off for the laptop (forever) :P

  4. Social networking pages run on a distorted Mean World Syndrome where everyone's life is more interesting and livelier than your own.

Sadly for us, we let it bog us down at times.

  5. Serving just the dessert...this was so accurate. The Facebook world is actually a place where almost everyone you know is doing better or at least pretending well, in their life.

P.S: I wanted to read your previous post in the afternoon, but had to run some errands. And now when I'm back, it's gone. How sad!

I know so many other couples who had love marriages and are living a happy life ...still they do not live their lives on facebook. 22. Very well written....a perspective well represented..

There's another way to see it, I think...

People always smile in their snaps...why? Because whatever crap we all are going through at that instant, including to smile forcefully, we still want our memories to be happy and untainted. Facebook is like those snaps. We all know that no one can be that "kewl" or in "luv", but it still gives all of us some moments which are at least devoid of any negativity. Seeing someone getting married or in a relationship or getting into National Law University may not make me happy, but like most people, I am not spiteful, so I don't feel bad either.

Think, in today's times, something that doesn't make us feel filled with negativity, is welcomed!

    Twitter, however, a polar opposite!

  26. there are two kinds of people in cyber world, people who are successful in real life, people who are not happy with real life.

people who are successful are two kinds, people without any hurdles coz of family background and riches.second ,people who struggle to become successful coz of poor financial status of family .

people of first kind use facebook coz they don't get much time to spend with family coz of non-existing relationships. people of second kind use facebook coz they want to show people that they are happy and successful though they din't had good financial background.

facebook is all about how successful you are in materialistic world.you will get more likes and friends as long as you are rich and keep achieving things.

fake profiles are for depressed and depressed use facebook to have little relief from real life misery.some depressed don't use facebook coz they are afraid of rampant prosperity shown in pics by people.

people who are wise and prosperous don't use facebook coz they have good family relations and balanced life, these people are busy with day to day activities and they hardly get any time for FB.

i don't have facebook account coz i don't have friends in real life or in virtual world,so its useless.hmm sometimes people who are very genuine gets separated from superficial world for a genuine reason called "people are not genuine".

  28. I deleted my fb account 3 months back and I have never been happier. I din't like the way people only put up the happy time pics and left the rest out until one guy posted a album of his grandfather's funeral pics. That is when I realized I din't want to know about the sad time of their lives either. I actually did not want to know anything about anybody.
That girl who is married and living in US happily and posting pics everyday struggled for 18 months looking for a job before finally quitting. I realized it is easier to feel sad than feel happy for her. With these realizations I felt that I was turning into a person I din't want to be. So quit. Now I am happy as I don't have her happiness rubbed in my face every time I log into fb and now I am genuinely happy for her too. :)

  51. Hi Red,

I am sorry I am so late to check in on your post.

Hi! My name is Vidhya and I had a FaceBook Addiction. I will be sober for two years this June 2014. I was very happy with facebook. It was an excellent means to stalk people from your past and future (future in the sense where you make an opinion about a person from their facebook profile even before meeting them face to face). Then I somehow realised that I am stalking on people in an effort to know about them but the same people are feeding me with information which is not actually representative of what they really are. So, I unfriended each and every one of my 60 friends with a vengeance and never went back. I have logged into FB with a fake account to stalk on people from my past for about 10 times in the past year. All the times I logged into my fake account I was going through pre-menstrual tension so I want to forgive myself. I want to make 2014 the year where even PMS cannot break me.

Like Bernadette would say I have been practicing for years to deal with my estrogen fluctuations and I will claim my control over it this year.

One more significant event which helped my get off facebook was when I realised how evil Mark 'SuckerBerg' was after I watched that movie based on his life.

Also the fact that I am leading a very depressing life is also keeping me away from facebook effectively.

Will I ever go back on Facebook? I really hope that I do not ever have to sink that low again.

    1. I am sinking lowwwwwwwwww....I am still on facebook, twitter and every social gatherings like this.

    2. Arre.. No... Darling... You are not sinking low... in fact you are above all this because you can see beyond the facade... you can be happy for others on facebook... and you can still continue to be yourself with a stable head.

I on the other hand get influenced and distracted very easily. So it is best for me (and only me) to stay away from any kind of social networking.

The facebook and twitter interface is actually very good for your blog's popularity. Your creative expression is linked to them. So you are not vain.

It does feel really nice to know that you look forward to my comments. Thank you.

      Keep the creative juices flowing.

  56. Agree with it. . I was part of the facebook drama once but now I am merely an observer without sharing a tiny bit about myself. . In a way feeling better because now I don't have that need to get likes and shallow comments from the people I barely know in facebook. . Good observations. .

  58. So much reality in this post. Yes, we all like to post only selective news. We would never put up our real life problems. The #100happyday photos that are posted are the most genuine pics that I have seen on facebook so far. Rest are just selective piece of information put up to make us jealous :P

  65. Man, my fb timeline would be very boring. Am I surrounded by such boring people or what. All I see is people getting married. And I feel sorry for them. :P :D

I remember me putting up a status once, "Let everyone's life be as awesome as they act it is to be on facebook". :-)

You called a male judge Madam..?? :D I once called my teacher 'Mommy' out loud in the class when I was in school. ;-)

  69. You have this uncanny ability to speak out the truth in a very pleasing manner. No wonder you're a lawyer :) This was such a nice post. FB is the only place where ppl r always happy. And that's not a reality at all !

  70. This reminds me of a fact that I read somewhere (and it is so true)
People are not as bad looking as they look in their Aadhar Card, and they are not as good looking as they seem to be in the FB.
